The Night of Wishes is a celebration of the strengths and commitment of the families and individuals with disabilities in Yellowstone and surrounding counties. Heartwarming stories of the successes and triumphs of people with disabilities are presented live and via video. Guests at the Night of Wishes become familiar with the life-affirming work of STEP and our volunteers. An elegant dinner and delightful entertainment are included.
Most importantly, this event offers guests the opportunity to be a apart of making our clients' wishes come true. Guests can select from the many wishes described in our program booklet, and give a financial donaton, pledge, or in-kind gift to fulfill a specific wish. Or, guests may contribute to the STEP Foundation endowment fund, which will enable us to provide services to people on waiting lists in future years. Gifts to our special funds (for client emergencies, transportation, and respite care) are also encouraged.
Although the majority of funding for STEP services does come from state and federal sources, there are still many unmet needs. Why? Simply put, the finances of many families are stretched to the limit by the extraordinary expenses of caring for a child with a disability. Medicaid does not cover the full cost of many items necessary for the child's well-being. Further, low reimbursement rates prevent many health care professionals from treating Medicaid clients, so often families must seek specialized health care and other services on a private pay basis. Families must continually find ways to meet the financial demands of constant medical treatments and specialized therapies.
The wishes fulfilled at past Night of Wishes events covered a wide range of items. One family asked for bunk beds, so their twin daughters would not have to sleep on the couch or floor. One parent asked for lumber to build a fence so his child could play safely in the backyard. Another family wished for prepaid gas cards, to help with the expenses of trips for therapies and medical appointments.
These wishes seem so simple. But for many families, simple pleasures just are not attainable. With help from generous community members and corporate sponsors, we can make these dreams a reality.
